FSKTM Students win Second Place in The Insurance Innovation Hackathon 2022

On April 10th, 2022, The Insurance Innovation Hackathon was held virtually and was open to all working professionals, fresh graduates, and university students over the ages of 18 residing in Malaysia. The event was organised by The Malaysian Insurance Institute in collaboration with FortNynja a well-known and reputable Cybersecurity company headquartered in Adelaide, Australia with offices in Malaysia and Hong Kong.  Apart from FortNynja, The Malaysian Insurance Institute also partnered up with Microsoft as their main tech partner. The main goal of the event was to get the public more educated on the importance of insurance and solve the issues that have been presented by Bank Negara Malaysia. Prior to the Hackathon itself, a plethora of events was held to give the competitors more insight and ideas to tackle the problems given. The events that were held were mentoring sessions from reputable individuals in the insurance industry, Code Clinic and Business Workshop.

 

 

Thirty-one participants from nine different teams came up with solutions to the problem statements presented which revolved around insurance. All teams were given a total of five days to code a prototype of their solutions and pitch those ideas to the panel of judges at the semi-finals that were held on April 9th, 2022.  The top six teams from the semi-finals advanced to the finals held on April 10th, 2022.

Team UPM Coders from the Department of Software Engineering and Information System, Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology, UPM managed to rise to the occasion and won 2nd place with a mobile app intended to make life insurance simple and accessible specifically targeting the B40 income class. The mobile application was created using Flutter and MySQL Database technology. Team UPM coders were comprised of five members, Muhammad Zikri bin Mohd Shafie, Muhammad Muqriez Adam Shah bin Nazlan Shah, Muhammad Nur Addin Abdul Hamid, Muhammad Aiman Hakim bin Azahari and Haris Lukman bin Muhammad Isror. By winning 2nd place the team brought home RM10,000 including a certificate of achievements. In addition to that, they were also awarded the “Best Pitch in Final Round” award amongst all the other finalists.
