Malaysian bags prestigious engineering award
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 13, 2014:
A Malaysian has been awarded the prestigious Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers’ (IEEE) Early Career Award for the year 2014.
Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) Computer Science and Information Technology senior lecturer Dr Thinagaran Perumal became the first Malaysian recently to receive the award which recognises individuals for making substantial contribution in the field of consumer electronics.
The award, presented on Oct 9, recognised Thinagaran for his research outcome in the field of consumer electronics, smart home systems as well as for active contribution as volunteer during his span with IEEE Consumer Electronics Malaysia Chapter.
Thinagaran was selected for his demonstration of field, leadership, team engagement in a specific area — technical or inventive merit — and project and organisational initiative for his project work.
The project, part of his PhD research on interoperability in smart homes, was completed in 2012.
“The work done is related on ensuring that consumer devices in smart home environment could achieve interoperability among heterogeneous devices in a federated platform,” Thinagaran explained.
“Consumer electronics and smart home is an emerging field, yet the impact in the local scene is yet to materialize but is gradually picking up,” he said.
Despite having various consumer devices around, Thinagaran had faced multiple challenges during the research word due to the lack of proper test bed in implementing applications with smart homes still being at its infancy stage in Malaysia.
“It feels good to help someone individually but certainly feels wonderful when you help someone with group of dedicated volunteers, which is what I have learned in the spirit of IEEE Consumer Electronic Society,” Thinagaran said to The Rakyat Post.
Expressing his gratitude to the UPM management, Thinagaran said he was honoured to represent the university and Malaysia to receive the award.
The award, assessed from the nomination and reference and open to contributors from all backgrounds without judging purely on academic merits, comprises a stipend of US$1,000 (RM3,257) and a certificate.
