Februari 2022 - The National Fintech Codeathon was held virtually and was open to all students from over 75 public and private universities in Malaysia. The event was organised by this year's host, University Malaysia Sabah (UMS) in collaboration with the Sabah Creative Economy and Innovation Centre (SCENIC). The main goal of this event was to facilitate youth involvement in Malaysia’s journey to manifest sustainable economic growth aided by Financial Technology (Fintech). The event was deemed to be important in finding talents to come up with new innovative and brilliant solutions to the current fintech issues in Malaysia. Apart from SCENIC, UMS’s Faculty of Computing and Informatics also collaborates with Computer Science Student Associations from other universities, namely COMSSA UPM, PERTEKMA UNIMAS, and I-TECH UUM, as well as Microsoft, FinTech Associations of Malaysia, Multimedia Development Corporation, PayHalal, and Printcious.

Prior to the competition day, major companies like Boost and Maybank shared deep insights on the success of their fintech approaches namely the useful e-wallets, banking services, and educational services pertaining financial literacy. This gave the participants an idea of what the current fintech demands are like before they can properly execute the technology effectively.

Seven teams comprising of three members each came up with solutions to a myriad of problem statements which revolve around fintech. All the contestants were given only three days to code a prototype of their solutions and pitch those ideas to the judges on the pitching day.

Team AMZ, the 3rd year students from the Department of Software Engineering and Information System, Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology, University Putra Malaysia managed to rise on winning 1st place with a mobile app intended for “aggregated personal finance” that they created using Flutter and Firestore Realtime Database technology. The AMZ team members are Muhammad Muqriez Adam Shah Nazlan Shah, Muhammad Nur Addin Abdul Hamid and Muhammad Zikri Mohd Shafie.

The 1st place brings home RM1500.00 with certificate of achievements. In addition, what makes the winning more valuable, they are also awarded as “Best Presenter” among all the participating teams from all over Malaysia.
