Kuala Lumpur, 6 April - A total of 8 students from the Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology (FSKTM), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) have participated in the Jom Sahur 2022 program, a community program jointly organized by FSKTM, UPM and Institut Onn Jaafar. 

In this program, students act as a workforce that will organize and distribute food packs to several food distribution centers for the homeless in Kuala Lumpur, namely Medan Tuanku Homeless Transit Center, Anjung Kembara Chow Kit and Anjung Singgah Jalan Tun Perak. The Onn Jaafar Institute, an NGO active in activities for the homeless acts as a facilitator and coordinator of program activities. The activity started at 8.30 pm where the students gathered at the IOJ office in Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman to listen to a coordination briefing from IOJ as well as collecting the food packs which are sponsored by private companies. The students were then taken to homeless centers to distribute the food packs and the activity ended at 11pm.

Computer Science Department lecturer, Ts Dr Iskandar Ishak who acted as the project leader said, the students are very excited to participate in this program because they can get to know the other side of life in the capital as well as realize the plight of the homeless. “Programs like this can give students a sense of awareness and empathy to the community. In this month of Ramadan, many people need help and support, the participation of students proves that UPM is always concerned about the fate of the needy such as the homeless ", he said.

Jom Sahur program is a continuation of the collaboration between FSKTM and Institut Onn Jaafar which has been established since 2016. Apart from Jom Sahur, the community programs that have been conducted together are such as Jom Brekfes and also Malaysian United Run.
