Congratulations to Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) student from Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology, Hoh Jia Da (Team Malaysia) along with his team for winning the first-ever AHAckathon organised by ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on disaster management (AHA Centre) after competing with teams from Indonesia, Vietnam, Singapore, Myanmar, Philippines, Brunei and Thailand in the ASEAN arena. As the regional champion of the competition, Team Malaysia walked away with USD 2,000 cash prizes.

AHAckathon is organised by ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on Disaster Management (AHA Centre) and Viet Nam Disaster Management Authority (VNDMA) in partnership with the Impact Week, HELP Logistics, Launchlabs Berlin and is supported by Japan-ASEAN Cooperation.

The objectives of this competition are to develop softwares or codes to solve 6 urgent challenges in humanitarian logistics faced by ASEAN governments. The teams competing will propose software or application-based solutions to the identified problems in humanitarian logistics. During the actual hackathon, all teams will have 48 hours to finish the application.

In the wake of disaster, response time and adequate relief items are the crux of any humanitarian crisis. The challenges faced by different stakeholders are as follows:

  1. Lack of information on the type and quantities of items required
  2. Lack of centralised real time information to monitor and coordination
  3. Slow identification process for need assessment

In response to these challenges, Team Malaysia has identified the suitable solution and proposed SMART ASEAN Disaster Relief App (ADRA) which is composed of an app and a dashboard to enhance the end-to-end process of disaster relief.

In the competitions, the teams are evaluated by the judges coming from members of ASEAN community.
